6 Must-Haves for a Solo Bike Ride

“The truth is you don’t know what is going to happen tomorrow. Life is a crazy ride, and nothing is guaranteed.” -Eminem

I’m sure we have all been on some kind of adventure in your life but, how many of us have attempted and succeeded in a solo trip, that too on a bike? Well, I don’t know the real head count but, as an adventurer and a bike lover, I definitely would love to go for a solo bike ride at least once in a lifetime.

How great would it be, for once, not having someone tagging along and nagging you all the time throughout your trip? How peaceful when all the decisions would be in your hand? I would have to say that it definitely is going to be a bliss!

bike ride

Now, solo motorcycle ride may sound exciting but can turn out to be a complete disaster if you’re not prepared beforehand. There are certain rules of the road that must be followed and certain situations that you must be aware of, in case they arise.

You might encounter a medical emergency that may be a major setback during the ride or, a minor one that could be taken care of if you’re well aware of first aid. If your bike ride is in winters, you might need to carry some liquor in case if the cold becomes unbearable.

And the most important thing to keep in mind is that to proceed with the solo bike trip, you must be fit in the body as well as in the mind, which can be achieved only through healthy living.

Living healthy is the first and foremost prerequisite for any adventure as that would be the key to the strength and energy required for your trip. Here are 6 must-have essentials if you’re planning a solo bike ride:

Helmet and gloves

As I mentioned earlier, there are certain rules of the road that must be followed to avoid any disasters. A Helmet is an essential, not only for long bike rides but also in daily routine office or college rides.

To avoid any fatal injuries, one must have a helmet on at all times of a bike ride. Also, while riding for long journeys, the need for waterproof gloves comes among the top requirements as they provide an enhanced grip and also help to avoid any abrasion injuries. If you’re riding in a cold weather, these gloves will come in handy to keep your palms warm and comforted.

Well, your bike needs fuel and once filled, it won’t go the entire journey if it’s a long one. So, carrying cash is a sensible idea as your fuel tank might get empty every now & then and it is not necessary that every gas or fuel station would have an ATM or card facility.

Also, not just for fuel, you’d be requiring cash for various other utilities like food, stay, toll booths etc. so why not just carry an extra stash.

Daily essentials like a shower gel, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, lotion, some tissues and a comb are a must on a long trip. If you’re planning to stay in hotels or camp outside, either way, it just makes good sense to be self-stocked on these things.

Also, one of the necessities in this category is the First-aid kit. The kit can have first aid items according to your requirements among which the most basic or common ones are paracetamols, ibuprofen, cotton, some Band-Aids, cold tablets and a gel for cuts and bruises.

It is highly essential to carry a first aid kit during such thrilling journeys.

Physical Map

Google Maps sure is a great guide but what would you do if you make a wrong turn and lose satellite service (or your phone’s battery!)? For such emergencies, it is necessary to carry a physical map.

This would help to fulfill your requirement of a guide when you land in situations as mentioned above. Also, carrying a guidebook would also come in handy in case you are visiting a place previously unknown to you.

Emergency beacons, also known as distress radio beacons, are tracking transmitters used to send signals about one’s location, and would definitely come in handy for such trips (if you know what I mean!)

A long journey is bound to bring wear and tear to your bike. More so, if your journey includes remote and deserted roads. So, carrying a small toolkit to fix minor issues of the bike is necessary for trips like these.

Also, a part of this is a pack of Fix-a-Flat for any puncture incidents, in case they happen. Hence, you must be aware of about the bike, issues it may face and the skills to get around them so as to avoid any ordeal.

Food and liquor

Well, your body needs fuel too and that requirement of yours can, obviously, be fulfilled only by what you put in your stomach. You can surely find food in most places but what if you’re a vegan and all you can find is meat? Or what if you get what you want but it’s priced at rates much higher than you thought it to be?

Hence, it is necessary to carry some amount of dry food for emergency cases. As we talked about earlier, you might travel during the winters and the cold weather may get unbearable.

For situations like these, it makes good sense that you carry a small amount of brandy liquor or Don Julio tequila to keep the cold from catching on to you!

Now that we know the essential requirements for a solo bike ride, we can surely avoid many ordeals and have an ever so amazing trip. All you need to take care of is that you have a spare change of clothes, a medical insurance, and a legitimate driving license.

You must also make sure that your bike is in good shape and so are you. So, what are you waiting for? Go on and have the adventure you always wanted.

May the odds ever be in your favor!
